Kungkungan Bay Resort (KBR) - Lembeh Strait
Kungkungan
Bay Resort, or KBR, is a first class dive resort located in Northern
Sulawesi, Indonesia. The resort is famous for two things: The term
'fine diving' and fantastic critter diving in the Lembeh Strait.
Some like to say the resort is only for "muck" diving,
but this is misleading. There is also fantastic coral and wall diving
as well as 3 WW II wrecks.
Diving
If you would like to discover some weird and wonderful underwater
inhabitants, don't look any further. At Kungkungan Bay Resort,
commonly referred to as KBR, all your wishes will come true.
Lembeh Straits is macro paradise. For me it was a first, and I am
hooked! But there is more to diving at KBR than just critters. There
are also three World War II shipwrecks and one sunken Taiwanese
fishing vessel to dive on. Diving these wrecks is not particularly
difficult but nevertheless very rewarding. These wrecks are basically
artificial reefs, and therefore attract a great variety of reef
life, both coral and fishes.
Dive Sites
On my very first dive I saw an orange frog fish, flying gurnards
and a juvenile batfish. Mind you, the eagle eyes of the dive guide
had a lot to do with these sightings. Police Pier, Hairball and
Nudi Falls are just some of the dive sites you will want to
go back to, over and over again. But if you are missing corals,
I would suggest an afternoon dive at the house reef (yes, there
actually is a reef, small as it may be).

The Resort
This small resort has such a welcoming atmosphere that you feel
right at home, before you had a chance to unpack your suitcase
and gear bag. Situated right on the water's edge, the resort is
built with natural, local materials and blends perfectly into the
surrounding coconut grove. KBR runs a fabulous spa which will pamper you while not diving. This exciting addition offers a full range of traditional Indonesian spa treatments
for your relaxation and wellbeing.
Captain
Billy's Bar is now open, upstairs from the resort's restaurant and
features a terrace where guests can enjoy spectacular views over
the Lembeh Strait, a TV lounge and a games area. An American Grill,
serving delicious steaks, BBQ, burgers and other American favorites
will open in 2009.
Accommodation
Cottages are nicely spaced to guarantee privacy. They are very spacious
and with a couple of ceiling fans and the windows wide open, air
conditioning is not really necessary. Although some of the Cottage
Suites are having air con installed. Tastefully furnished with plenty
of natural woods, the rooms are very welcoming.
To ensure that guests unwind completely, there are no telephones
or TV in the rooms. However, if you suffer withdrawal symptoms,
a TV with cable channels can be found in the main building above
the restaurant.
Dive Shop
KBR's dive shop guarantees
consistency in service. Their experienced dive guides will show
you the wonders of the "critter heaven". Your gear will
be set up and washed down for you by the very helpful and friendly
dive crews. All you will need to look after is your camera equipment.
Photo/Video Facilities
A lockable camera room with plenty of shelves provides enough space
for everyone. There are numerous powerpoints, allowing chargers
etc to be plugged into. Remember to bring an adapter as Indonesian
sockets take two round pins.
Activities
Apart from eating, diving, eating, diving and sleeping it is also
possible to arrange for local tours, a visit to the Bitung markets
or maybe a massage. The friendly reception staff will assist you,
with a smile.
